![]() While some canaries may love shredded carrots, others may prefer romaine lettuce. A healthy mix of fruits and vegetables, shredded into pick-up-and-fly pieces should be offered daily and removed within an hour or two. Since canaries are mainly seed eaters and not insect eaters, their protein is found in canary grass and rape seed (both found in his canary mix) however, his diet should be supplemented with egg food. Protein is a very important part of your canary’s diet (about 12%). Check his seed twice daily, and don’t be fooled by the empty husks he will leave in the dish! Blow them off into the garbage, stir and top up as needed. You must give your canary a balanced diet if he is to live a long and happy life! Fresh canary seed mix should always be available. For optimal feather colouration, Canthaxanthin and Beta-Carotene should be provided in a 50/50 ratio. This is not the healthiest option because using Canthaxanthin on it’s own will eventually produce a dull red shade rather than a bright red hue. Canthaxanthin is the strongest colour producing chemical and is often used on it’s own. These are Canthaxanthin, Beta-Carotene and orange Carotenoids. There are three main chemicals that are used in supplemental colour diets. Carotenoids need to be consumed with a fat in order for the body to consume them. Some foods that are rich in carotenoids are: carrots, yams, sweet potato, papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, mango, spinach, kale, bell peppers and oranges. However, it should make a large difference compared to not "colour feeding" at all, which will basically yield a yellow canary after the molt is completed.Ĭarotenoids are plant pigments that are responsible for the yellow, orange and red colour in many fruits and vegetables. Results of the colour feedings vary depending on how much each individual bird eats. However, colour feeding is really only required when new feathers are growing in, and this usually occurs when birds are molting. In order to maintain their rich red plumage, red-factor canaries must be fed foods rich in beta-carotene, or a supplement of half pure beta-carotene and half pure canthaxanthin to maintain their best colour. This creates a rose colour rather than bright red. Soft feathered canaries have downier plumage and the colors are subdued. Hard feathered birds have tight plumage and bright colors. The term frosted is used to describe a dilution on the edging of the feathers making the bird look dusty. ![]() Can appear on any colour variety.ĭark red and brown.
